Bad Homburg: the park-side casino hotel

The casino that opened in 1841 sits inside the Kurpark, a brine spa sits beside the casino car park and Frankfurt Hbf is about 24 minutes away by S-Bahn (fastest sample). The quietest and most practical of the six.

Our verdict

Who it is for

Choose Bad Homburg for a calm stay between park and airport, with a casino that treats a jacket as an offer, not a rule.

Admission is from 18, the day ticket for the classic games is €2.50 and the slot hall is free. The dress code asks guests to avoid "overly casual" clothing but welcomes men without a tie, in an open shirt or a polo, and lends a jacket "if in doubt". Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof is a direct S5 ride away, and the Kur-Royal day spa, a brine-based bath, shares a car park with the casino.

Know before you book: no Michelin-listed restaurant stands in Bad Homburg itself, and we found no official walking time between the hotel and the casino (the hotel's station is 1.0 km away). The dining notes below point to the Taunus towns nearby and to Frankfurt.

The casino

Spielbank Bad Homburg stands in the Kurpark at Kisseleffstraße 35. The Blanc brothers, François and Louis, signed a 30-year contract with Landgrave Philipp in 1840, and the casino opened on 23 May 1841. It closed on 31 December 1872, ahead of the German casino ban, and reopened on 7 April 1949. The city calls it the "Mother of Monte Carlo"; that is a marketing nickname, and the often-repeated claim that the Blancs introduced the single-zero wheel here is disputed (see the Journal).

Rooms & spa

The Steigenberger Hotel Bad Homburg on the Kaiser-Friedrich-Promenade has 174 rooms and suites in four categories: Superior doubles from 28 m², Deluxe rooms from 32 m² (some with park views), Junior Suites from 38 m² with a balcony and Suites from 54 m². Beds are extra-long, rooms are air-conditioned and WLAN is free. The hotel was renovated from July 2015 to December 2016. One third-party listing gives per-category counts that add up to 189, so we do not print counts. One wheelchair-accessible room is listed.

The hotel has a Technogym fitness area, a Finnish sauna and a Roman steam bath; opening hours are not published. The pet policy, parking price and check-in times are not stated on the pages we could read. Bookings go through H Rewards, +49 6172 181-0.

The Kur-Royal day spa

For a real soak, use the Kur-Royal in the Kaiser-Wilhelms-Bad (built 1887–1890 by Louis Jacobi). The water is natural brine (Sole); the spa makes no thermal claim, and there is no Roman-Irish bath, only a Caldarium at 45 °C. The brine relaxation pool is kept at 30–32 °C, and there are an oriental brine bath, a Solepark with a graduation tower, a salt-crystal grotto, a hay steam bath and the Sauna der Sinne at 80 °C (the only textile-free area). Guests must be 16 or older and wear swimwear and non-slip shoes.

Hours are Sunday to Thursday 10:00–20:00 and Friday to Saturday 10:00–22:00 from September to April (daily 10:00–20:00 from May to August). Two hours cost €28 Monday to Thursday and €32 Friday to Sunday and holidays; four hours are €44 and €49; the day ticket with a bistro meal is €85; the Monday-to-Thursday Happy Hour (17:00–20:00) is €30. The spa closes on Good Friday and on 24–25 December. Tickets are sold at the hotel and at the spa. It will close at 16:00 on Thursday 3 December 2026.

History of the hotel

Konrad Ritter bought a house of 1854–56 and opened Ritter's Park-Hotel in 1883. Steigenberger took it over in 1956 and closed it in 1977; a new building reopened in 1991 after demolition in 1983–84. Empress Elisabeth (1898) and Edward VII are among the recorded guests.

The kitchen

The hotel has an all-day restaurant, Ritter's Restaurant, and Ritter's Bar with a terrace. The casino has Le Blanc, a restaurant with set menus from €46, and two bars. For stars you travel: Kraftwerk in Oberursel and Villa Rothschild in Königstein are the nearest Michelin-listed tables, and Frankfurt has several starred restaurants.
